Story

A Remarkable Life

SHE WAS LOVED

Dr. Augustina Odame, fondly called Oye by those who knew and loved her, lived a life of purpose, grace, and quiet impact. Though her time here was far too short, it was a life deeply and beautifully lived, marked by brilliance, kindness, service, and love.

She was a woman of remarkable intellect and conviction, dedicated to shaping better systems, stronger institutions, and greater opportunities for others across Africa. Through her work in economics, digital policy, and financial inclusion, she helped shape important conversations and meaningful change. She served with distinction in national and regional spaces, including on the Bank of Ghana’s Payment Systems Advisory Committee and the Steering Committee of the GIZ Digital Transformation Center, where her insight helped inform conversations on digital inclusion, interoperability, innovation, and ecosystem support.

Her professional journey was defined not only by excellence, but by trust. She helped position the Ghana Chamber of Technology as a leading voice in Ghana’s technology and digital innovation ecosystem, championing reforms, building capacity, and strengthening the resilience of the sector. She advised governments, regulators, and industry coalitions across Africa, led regulatory strategy for fintech companies entering key African markets, and supported innovation through partnerships with institutions such as UNCDF. Earlier in her career, she also managed multi-country digital finance projects and helped secure $500,000 in donor funding, contributing to product deployments in Ghana and Zambia.

Oye’s brilliance was recognised throughout her academic and professional life. She was an iUTAH Graduate Research Fellow, received the USDA Student Diversity Award, and was awarded the Graduate School Vice President for Research Fellowship. She was also selected as a Young African Leadership Fellow at the EUI School of Transnational Governance, where her research contributed to thinking around digital policy harmonisation and digital trade within the African Continental Free Trade Area. Her academic path took her from the University of Ghana to a Ph.D. in Economics at Utah State University, and on to postdoctoral research at Yale, where she contributed to interdisciplinary policy research with global relevance.

But beyond every title, fellowship, and achievement, Oye was cherished for who she was at heart. She was a dear daughter, a beloved friend, and a valued colleague, warm, thoughtful, generous, and deeply respected by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She had a way of bringing clarity, calm, and wisdom into every room she entered. She was not only admired for her excellence, but loved for her humanity.

Those who knew her will remember her for her gentle strength, her sharp mind, her sincerity, and the care with which she carried both her work and her relationships. She gave so much of herself to the world around her, and her presence left a lasting mark on countless lives.

Dr. Augustina Odame’s legacy lives on not only in the work she championed, but in the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the memories she leaves behind.

She was here. She mattered. She was loved. And she will be deeply missed.
